How to Write a Cover Letter That Gets Read

"Cover letter optional." It’s the most confusing phrase in a job application. Should you write one? The answer is almost always YES. It’s your secret weapon to stand out from the "easy apply" crowd.

Why bother?

Your resume is a factual list of what you've done. Your cover letter is the narrative that explains who you are and why you want this job. It allows you to explain gaps in employment, career pivots, or your specific passion for the company's mission.

The Winning Structure

Keep it to one page, 3-4 paragraphs max. Here is the blueprint:

1. The Hook (Paragraph 1)

Don't start with "I am writing to apply for..." Boring! Start with why this company excites you.
"Having been a user of Product X for five years, I was thrilled to see an opening for..."

2. The "Why You" (Paragraph 2)

Pick 1-2 top achievements from your resume and expand on them. Connect them directly to the problems the company needs solving. Show them you understand their pain points.

3. The "Why Them" (Paragraph 3)

Prove you’ve done your homework. Mention a recent award they won, a project they launched, or their company values. "I admire your commitment to sustainability..."

4. The Close (Paragraph 4)

Keep it confident and polite. "I’d love to discuss how my skills can contribute to your team. Thank you for your time."

Top Tips for Success

  • Address a real person: Try to find the hiring manager's name on LinkedIn. "Dear Mr. Smith" is 100x better than "To Whom It May Concern."
  • Don't repeat your resume: Use this space to tell stories, not list dates.
  • Match the tone: If it's a hip startup, be a bit more casual. If it's a law firm, keep it formal.
