CTC vs In-Hand Salary: Why is your take-home pay less? (2026 Guide)

Congratulations! You cracked the interview and HR offered you a package of ₹6 Lakhs Per Annum (LPA). You divide 6,00,000 by 12 and expect ₹50,000 to hit your bank account every month.

But when the first salary comes... it is only ₹38,000. What happened? Where did the money go? Welcome to the confusing world of CTC vs In-Hand Salary.

1. The Components of CTC (Cost to Company)

CTC is the total amount the company spends on you, not what you receive. It includes:

  • Basic Salary: The core taxable part (usually 40-50% of CTC).
  • HRA (House Rent Allowance): For rent expenses (tax exemptions available).
  • Special Allowances: Balancing components.
  • Retirals (PF & Gratuity): Money saved for your future (you don't get this now).
  • Insurance Premiums: Health/Life insurance costs paid by the employer.

2. Why is In-Hand Salary Less?

Your "Take Home" or Net Salary is calculated as:
Gross Salary - Deductions = In-Hand Salary

Common Deductions:

  • Employees' Provident Fund (EPF): 12% of your Basic Salary is deducted for your retirement fund.
  • Professional Tax (PT): A state tax (approx ₹200/month in states like Maharashtra/Karnataka).
  • Income Tax (TDS): If your salary is above the taxable slab (₹7L+ under new regime), tax is cut every month.

3. Variable Pay & Joining Bonus

Be careful! Companies often include a "Performance Bonus" (Variable Pay) in the CTC. If the CTC is 10 LPA with 2 Lakhs variable, your guaranteed pay is only 8 LPA. Always ask HR: "What is the fixed component?"

How to Negotiate?

When discussing salary, never just ask for a higher CTC. Ask for a higher Basic Salary or In-Hand Salary. Use a detailed resume to highlight your skills—recruiters pay for value, not just years of experience.
